{"id":195,"date":"2015-03-20T00:15:06","date_gmt":"2015-03-20T04:15:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.s393894714.onlinehome.us\/?page_id=195"},"modified":"2020-07-27T17:19:31","modified_gmt":"2020-07-27T21:19:31","slug":"pmta-keystone-composition-competition","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.pamusicteachers.org\/staging\/activities\/pmta-keystone-composition-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"PMTA Keystone Composition Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Purpose<\/h2>\n<p>To give students an opportunity to develop creativity, self-expression and better musicianship through the art of composition.<\/p>\n<h2>Classes of Entry<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Elementary<\/strong> \u2013 Age 5-10 as of January 1<\/li>\n<li><strong>Junior<\/strong> \u2013 Age 11-14 as of January 1<\/li>\n<li><strong>Senior<\/strong> \u2013 Age 15-18 as of January 1<\/li>\n<li><strong>Young Artist<\/strong> \u2013 Age 19-25 as of January 1<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Student Requirements<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Students must reside in Pennsylvania or study with a teacher with an established studio in Pennsylvania.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Teacher Requirements<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Teacher must have an established studio in Pennsylvania.<\/li>\n<li>Participating PMTA teacher\u2019s state dues must be paid for the current year BEFORE entering event.<\/li>\n<li>Non-PMTA teachers must pay a $50 non-member fee in addition to the student entry fees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Composition Requirements<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>For all classes, the composition may be in any recognized tonal or atonal style for any instrument or style.<\/li>\n<li>The following length requirements apply:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Elementary &amp; Junior<\/strong> &#8211; 16 measures minimum<\/li>\n<li><strong>Senior &amp; Young Artist<\/strong> &#8211; 32 measures minimum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Total performance time will not exceed 15 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Words used in vocal compositions may be original. The author of the text must be identified. No compositions shall infringe on existing copyrights.<\/li>\n<li>Ensemble works are limited to a maximum of nine (9) performers.<\/li>\n<li>Compositions for prepared piano will not be accepted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Submission Requirements<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Entrants may submit only pieces that have not been previously submitted for this contest or previously published, recorded or performed for commercial purposes.<\/li>\n<li>Entrants may submit any number of compositions per event. However, an entry fee must accompany each submission.<\/li>\n<li>A fully realized score, completely notated by the composer, is required. The manuscript must be in the composer\u2019s handwriting or in the form of a computer printout produced by the composer. Illegible copies will not be accepted.<\/li>\n<li>Manuscripts must be titled on the top of the first page. The compositions must have the title,\u00a0<strong>the name of the student<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>category<\/strong>\u00a0(Elementary, Junior, Senior, Young Artist).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>The teacher\u2019s name must not appear on the manuscript.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Manuscripts of more than one page should be numbered.<\/li>\n<li>Measures of the composition must be numbered at the beginning of each system.<\/li>\n<li>Students may include a brief description, narrative or explanation of the composition (less than 50 words) at the end of the manuscript (must be included within the PDF file).<\/li>\n<li>No change may be made to the manuscript once it has been submitted with the application.<\/li>\n<li>No tape-recorded entries will be accepted.<\/li>\n<li>Students submit completed compositions to their teacher. It is the teacher\u2019s responsibility to forward the compositions as PDF attachments to the composition chair\u2019s address below. Teachers should submit one check,\u00a0<em>payable to<\/em>\u00a0PMTA, for the total of all entries and fees along with the entry forms.<\/li>\n<li>Compositions must be received by May 15. Applications and the entry fees should be postmarked NO LATER THAN May 15.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Entry fees are $25 per entry for students of PMTA teachers, $45 per entry for students of non-PMTA teachers. Entry fees are non-refundable.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Any submission that does not meet the submission requirements will be disqualified.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Awards<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Awards in each category are:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Elementary &amp; Junior:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>First Place $75<\/li>\n<li>Second Place $50<\/li>\n<li>Third Place $40<\/li>\n<li>Honorable Mention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Senior &amp; Young Artist:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>First Place $100<\/li>\n<li>Second Place $75<\/li>\n<li>Third Place $50<\/li>\n<li>Honorable Mention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Additional prizes may be awarded at the discretion of the judges in collaboration with the committee.<\/li>\n<li>Awards may be suspended if, in the final opinions of the judges, none of the entries submitted warrants commendation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Performance Requirements<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Winners will be invited to perform their composition in one of the fall DSPF Showcase Recitals.
