Honors Music Institute at Penn State

We are pleased to announce that the eighth annual Honors Music Institute will be held July 12-18, 2020! This one-week residential program offers an intensive immersion in the art of music making for talented high school students and is open to students entering grade nine through those graduating in spring 2020. Specific areas of study include Chamber Choir (32 students), Wind Ensemble (50 students), Jazz Combo (8 or more students), Music Technology (up to 10 students) and Piano (up to 24 students).

Marian Garcia International Piano Competition and Festival

Hosted by the Penn State School of Music’s piano faculty, this year’s event includes competitions and masterclasses for collegiate and high school pianists. The festival was created through a generous grant from Edith Garcia, mother of local physician Dr. Marian Garcia.

We are excited that this year’s event will take place in our new Recital Hall and will make use of our two beautiful new Hamburg Steinways. Competitions and recitals will take place in the new hall using these exquisite instruments.

Mansfield University Summer Piano Camp

Dates: August 11, 2019 – August 15, 2019
Ages: 13 – 18
Campers will receive private instruction as well as small group instruction. They will attend music theory, aural skills, and sight reading classes, and also perform in daily masterclasses. The camp culminates in a final public concert featuring solos, duets, and large piano ensemble performances. Campers should bring to the camp 2-4 solo pieces they are working on.

Dorothy Sutton Performance Festival (DSPF)

Begun in 1980 by Dorothy Sutton, the Dorothy Sutton Performance Festival is an opportunity for the talented music student to participate in a State Festival in a Showcase Recital. To assure high standards, the student must first qualify with a Superior rating in Local Preliminary Auditions, and must demonstrate a minimal knowledge of music theory by passing a written theory exam with a grade of 85%. Students performing at the State Festival Showcase Recital will receive a gold medal and a Certificate of Participation.

West Chester University High School Summer Music Institute

West Chester University’s 57th annual High School Summer Music Institute will take place from Monday, July 8 through Saturday, July 13, 2019. The Institute offers resident and commuter options for students currently in grades 9 through 12. Students have the opportunity to perform in a variety of large and small ensembles including wind ensemble, string orchestra, chorus, flute ensemble, clarinet ensemble, saxophone ensemble, double reed ensemble, brass ensemble, percussion ensemble and vocal ensemble. All ensembles perform at the end of the Institute, and all concerts are open to family and friends. Auditions for a solo recital are held at the beginning of the week.

The Institute’s faculty consists primarily of WCU music professors, all of whom are active performing artists in the Philadelphia region. Each student receives two 30-minute private lessons and one studio masterclass on their primary instrument or voice. Students will also participate in music theory/ear training, college prep and audition prep classes.

Recreational activities include volleyball, a scavenger hunt, movie night, a pizza party and other organized evening activities.

PMTA Keystone Concerto Festival (CF)

Online registration begins October 1, 2019 and ends at 3:00 pm EST, Monday, October 25, 2019.

The PMTA Keystone Concerto Festival (CF) will be held this year on Saturday, November 23, 2019 in conjunction with the DSPF Solo and Ensemble Showcase Recitals at Penn State University. Students, parents and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend. All registration and scheduling of the CF is done online through this website. Students performing at the CF will receive a certificate and a critique. Performers are not in competition with one another, and will be rated Very Good, Excellent or Superior. Those rated Superior at this performance will receive a gold medal at the end of the day, distributed to their teachers. No specific time requests can be honored. More detailed information
